“The Messenger” is a 2009 American drama film directed by Oren Moverman. Strictly speaking it is Moverman’s directional debut within the whole film and movie scene. Oren Moverman also wrote the screenplay in close collaboration with Alessandro Camon, an Italian writer and film producer. The film was successful, especially in the United States of America, and has received much attention – also in European countries like Germany and Austria where the film title was extended by “The Messenger – Die letzte Nachricht”.
As already mentioned “The Messenger” was Oren Moverman’s first film as a director. Strictly speaking Oren Moverman was born on July 4, 1966. He is an Israeli filmmaker, former journalist and screenwriter. Before “The Messenger” Oren Moverman only worked as a screenwriter for a variety of different films and movies such as “Jesus’ Son”, “Face”, “I’m Not There”, “Married Life” and “Geschenke online”. With “The Messenger” he finally managed to achieve his great breakthrough as a film director. His latest film directed by him as well is titled “This Side of the Looking Glass”.
The film “The Messenger” starring Ben Foster, Jena Malone, Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton celebrated its premiere in 2009 at the so-called Sundance Film Festival. Furthermore, it has to be mentioned that Moverman’s “The Messenger” was in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival 2009 where it was awarded the Silver Bear and the Berlinale Peace Film Award ’09. Strictly speaking “The Messenger” received the Silver Bear for the Best Screenplay.
Moverman’s “The Messenger” also placed first at the Deauville American Film Festival in 2009. Moreover, at the Independent Spirit Awards “The Messenger” was awarded a special price in one out of four nominated categories. Further important and appreciable accomplishments consisted in the nomination at the Golden Globes in 2009 as well as in two 2009 Academy Award nominations.
